Regien Biesma is a lecturer in epidemiology and public health medicine in RCSI and coordinates the Population and International health module in the undergraduate and graduate program (GEP). She obtained her doctorate in Public Health from Maastricht University, the Netherlands and holds Master’s degrees in Epidemiology and Public Health. Regien worked as a coordinator of international academic cooperation in Eastern Europe, the New Independent States, and Mongolia and was involved in a cohort study on Diet and Cancer at Maastricht University. In her current position, Regien is involved in two research projects: a collaborative study on the effect of Global Health Initiatives on health systems in Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa and Angola and in the Ireland-Africa Partnership for Health Research Capacity Strengthening. Research interests include constraints to scale up of health programmes in low income countries, such as HIV/AIDS, maternal health and chronic diseases and changing patterns of diseases.

Professor Ruairí Brugha qualified as a doctor at UCD in 1980 and spent six years in Africa in the 1980s-90s as a clinician, public health specialist and researcher. He completed his public health medicine training in the UK and joined the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1996 as a lecturer and then senior lecturer. He was co-editor of Health Policy and Planning from 1999 and Head of the Health Policy Unit from 2003. In 2005, he joined the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland as the first full time Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine. He conducts health policy and health systems research, mainly in Africa and Ireland. Elaine’s general research interest areas are: information systems and social development; qualitative research methodology, and; health information systems, in particular around HIV and AIDS. She obtained her doctorate from the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa in Public Health on the design and development of community based health information systems. Her Masters and undergraduate degrees in economics were obtained from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Elaine left the University of Pretoria as senior lecturer in Information Systems in March 2008 and is currently Research Programme Coordinator for Connecting Health Research in Africa and Ireland Consortium (CHRAIC) .

Professor Samuel J. McConkey, Head of the Department, Course Co-ordinator, Senior Lecturer, Course Co-ordinator, joined the Department in January 2005 and leads the clinical Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine service at Beaumont Hospital – the main teaching hospital for R.C.S.I. Travellers may also opt for care in Our Lady’s Hospital, Drogheda, which has a long tradition of providing Tropical Medicine service linked to R.C.S.I. In the past, he worked as Head of Viral Disease Research Section in MRC Laboratories in The Gambia and previous to that in Oxford University and in Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests are in vaccine development, HIV2, hepatitis B, HIV1, HTLV1, malaria and tuberculosis. Understanding the context of disease and health care using multidisciplinary methods may prove the way for more effective interventions, so recently three new research projects in this area have been commenced.

Diarmuid is Senior Lecturer in Social & Preventive Medicine at NUI Galway and Director of Public Health in the Health Service Executive (HSE West, Galway). He is a Project Leader in the Health Promotion Research Centre. He coordinates the Public Health content of the undergraduate medical curriculum and is director of the postgraduate Diploma/Masters programme in Health Services Research. With colleagues in Bacteriology he coordinates the undergraduate course in Global Health and Development. He qualified in medicine in NUI Galway and in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He trained in General Practice and Public Health Medicine in England. He lived and worked in Africa for seven years.

Steve is a Lecturer in Health Policy and Management and the Director of the Masters in Global Health at Trinity College Dublin. Prior to moving to Ireland he was the Director of the Health Economics Unit at the University of Cape Town. Steve did his undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and his Masters degree in Development Economics at Oxford University, before completing his PhD at the University of Cape Town. He has a wealth of experience in policy oriented research in government and academia in developing countries, particularly in South Asia and East and Southern Africa. His research interests include resource allocation, equity, health financing and the development of absorptive capacity in rural districts as a platform for health system change. He is also interested in the politics of reform and how best to deal with vested interests in the health system. Currently, he is leading research into the viability of Social Health Insurance in the Irish context. Other current research interests include evaluating the applicability of a RAWP type model for health sector resource allocation in the Irish context and exploring strategies to retain human resources in developing countries through the use of incentive packages.

Lineo Tsekoa is a registered Nurse/midwife and Mental Health Nurse. She qualified in 1973 and worked in Missionary hospital and Government hospital as a nurse/midwife. After his post doctoral fellowship, he worked in Sierra Leone from 1984-1995 teaching and conducting research in tropical disease rising to Associate Professor in 1992. In 1985, he established the Tropical Diseases Research Unit in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Njala University College, University of Sierra Leone. He returned to the USA during the civil war and worked at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Molecular Immunology and Microbiology as a Visiting Scholar from 1995-1997 conducting research on river blindness.In 1997, he joined the Department of Biology at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland teaching Microbiology and conducting research in tropical diseases. In 2005, he was appointed Vice Chancellor and Principal, University of Sierra Leone, a position he held till 2009, when he retired. He is now a consultant and conducts research in tropical diseases. Dr Sahr is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Microbiology in the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone and Head of the 34 Military Hospital in Sierra Leone. Dr Sahr obtained his BSc. Degree in Health Sciences from the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone in 1992 and his M.B.ch. B. and M.Sc.degrees in 1995 and 2000 respectively from the same institution. In 2006 he obtained a D. Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Science and Technology of China and has published over twenty-five articles in both local and international journals. Hisham Y. Hassan, MSc., PhD., an assistant professor of molecular biology at the University of Science and Technology in Khartoum. He graduated at the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Khartoum with honors in Zoology. In 2003, he joined the Institute of Endemic Diseases, University of Khartoum to do his master degree in molecular biology. His study addresses diverse aspects of molecular archeology and population genetics, during the first year he managed to carry out a unique study on genetic patterns of Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA variation, with implications to the peopling of Africa’s Sahel and East Africa, and according to the potential scientific value of the data his registration has been upgraded to the degree of doctoral of philosophy. He was awarded his PhD in molecular biology in 2009. His current research focuses on the effect of infections on the genetic make-up of the immune system.

He was the vice chancellor of Khartoum University from 1991-1994. He gained special training in gastrointestinal endoscopy, abdominal untrasonography and Clinical Pharmacology. Abdalla Elkhawad is professor of pharmacology and teaches pharmacology for pharmacy, dental and postgraduate students. He obtained his doctorate in pharmacology from Southampton University in UK, and holds a Master degree in Biochemical Pharmacology. Elkhawad worked at several universities in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, England, USA, and Jordan. He was involved in research work on Heat stroke and thermal physiology of the camel, cardiovascular and neuropharmacology of dopamine receptors. In Sudan he was involved in training pharmacists and doctors on communication skills and safe use of medicines. Dr Aziz is an accredited Consultant in Public Health Medicine in the Sudan and UK. She has over fifteen years experience in public health, ten years of which have been spent in the UK. She recently returned to the Sudan where she has taken up post as the establishing Head of Research and Consultancy at the Public Health Institute. Dr Aziz has significant experience in health strategy, teaching and research. While in the UK, Dr Aziz worked as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in Salford and Sheffield. One of her more recognised projects was the Health Impact Assessment for Robin Hood [Finningley] Airport in Doncaster, and instrumental in the go-ahead for the airport. Previously in the Sudan, Dr Aziz was Assistant Professor at the University of Khartoum, where she taught medical statistics & epidemiology, and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate theses. She established the Research Unit for Khartoum State Ministry of Health in 2007, and this was the blueprint for other State ministries. Dr Aziz is a founding member of the Sudanese Public Health Network in the UK established in 2003. As the Sudan Health Consultancy, the group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sudan Federal Ministry of Health to provide strategic support and training.
Dr. Muna Hassan Mustafa, MBBS, MD.

Dr Muna Mustafa obtained her MBBS and MD in Community Medicine from University of Khartoum. She worked at the Khartoum State Ministry of Health Research Department for nine years, and was the head department for six years. After that she joined the World Health Organization Sudan Office as a Technical/Research Officer. Currently she is the Head of Research section at the Public Health Institute. She also coordinated the Biostatistics and Research Methodology modules for the Master of Public Health programme at the Public Health Institute. She teaches biostatistics and research methodology for undergraduates and post graduate students and supervises postgraduate theses at International University of Africa and Sudan Medical Specialisations Board. Dr. Muna was a member of the technical team for the Sudan Household Health Survey 2006 (Multi Indicator Cluster Survey) and also was a member of the technical team for the National Health Expenditure Survey and National Health Accounts. She was the principal investigator for many researches in the field of public health; five of which were awarded regional and local grants.
Uganda:
Freddie Ssengooba MD, MPH, PhD.
Dr. Ssengooba, is currently a Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer in Health Economics and Health Systems Management at Makerere University. Dr Ssengooba has led a program of research on the organizational reforms like decentralization of health services; autonomy and efficiency of hospitals; performance-based contracting and its impacts on health system in general and on the workforce in particular. He has also provided technical services to WHO, World Bank, Ministries of Health, Uganda AIDS Commission and Multi-lateral and Bilateral Agencies.
Juliet Nabyonga MD MSc
Dr Nabyonga currently works with WHO Uganda office as the health economist and works very closely the Ministry of Health in her roles as WHO technical staff. Dr Nabyonga has worked on health financing in Uganda including studies of use-charges, health development assistance and health policy analysis.
Allen Magezi MSc
Dr Allen Magezi worked the ministry of health and in 2009 moved into private consultancy work. Dr. Magezi has worked in health sector planning for government in the health sector. She has conducted studies on the health sector performance and done several evaluation of health sector programs.
Vincent Kawooya MC MPH
Dr Vincent Kawooya is a research fellow at Makerere University School of Public Health. Prior to this he is worked at the district as a hospital manager. He has a master of public from Makerere University. The current research included evaluation of HIV health programs and public awareness for the role of male medical circumcision in HIV prevention.

Samuel Anya obtained BMedSc (Pharmacology) and MBBS degrees from University of Port Harcourt Nigeria. He undertook postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology and qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. In 2002, he moved to The Gambia as a lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology and honorary consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist. Having experienced firsthand how shortcomings in the health system contribute to poor maternal and newborn outcomes, he has now committed himself to understanding and seeking solutions to these challenges. Samuel regards the CHRAIC PhD programme as an opportunity to further his understanding of health systems and reflect on options for strengthening them.
Anna Colletar Awor MStat

Anna C. Awor is a CHRAIC PhD Scholar in Health Systems Research. Anna has a Bachelor Degree in Statistics and masters degree in Biostatistics, both from Makerere University, Uganda. Prior to commencing her PhD she received a McGoldrick Biostatistics fellowship Scholars Award from Harvard School of Public Health. She worked as a Statistician for the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-Uganda) where she was involved in the protocol writing and analysis of research data and has co-authored a number of peer reviewed papers. For her PhD she will be working on integration of family planning and PMTCT services, her PhD supervisor is Dr. Elaine Byrne.
Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf

Dr. Khalifa Elmusharaf, a medical doctor, has been always inspired in the field of medical education, researches and woman health since he was an undergraduate. Dr. Elmusharaf underwent his professional medical training in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and received the Part 1 MRCOG Degree (UK). During this period he has been involved continuously in research work in different fields of reproductive health and has completed a postgraduate-diploma in Research Methodology and Biostatistics as well as a part 1 Clinical MD in Community Medicine in an attempt to integrate his clinical experience with that of the epidemiological and research approach.
Diane Nurse
B.Sc (Occupational Therapy); BA Hons. (Psychology); M.Phil (Maternal and Child Health)
Diane qualified as an Occupational Therapist at the University of Cape Town and worked in various settings in South Africa before moving to the Western Cape Department of Health as Assistant Director for Rehabilitation. In 2001, she moved to Ireland and was employed in the former Eastern Regional Health Authority as a Service Planner for Disability and for Social Inclusion. With the establishment of the Health Service Executive, she took on the role of National Specialist Planner for Social Inclusion. In this capacity, she has led on development of the HSE National Intercultural Health Strategy and currently has responsibility for coordinating its implementation. Her interests are in the area of health and social exclusion, with an emphasis on working towards improving access to health services by people from disadvantaged groups. It is likely that Diane’s thesis will focus on aspects of violence against minority ethnic women. ; Professor Ruairi Brugha is her supervisor.
Everd Maniple Bikaitwoha

Everd is a lecturer in Health Services Management at Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, in Uganda. He has a diverse research background on several aspects relevant to Health Systems Research, ranging from Human Resources for Health (training, workload, productivity, HIV/AIDS, motivation); Health Systems Development (public-private partnership for health, decentralization); hospital organization, management, and efficiency (strategic planning, cost analysis); Equity in health (access determinants); Health Financing (health insurance) and quality of care (prescription practices, patient safety). He is a medical doctor with MPH both qualifications obtained from Makerere University, Kampala. He has worked in rural health services in Uganda and Rwanda, initially as a hospital-based clinician and later as a manager at district and regional levels. He also has a long working experience with international NGOs and universities in Uganda.
John Kadzandira
John Kadzandira is a Research Fellow in Public Health at the Centre for Social Research of the University of Malawi where he has been working since 1998. The Centre is the research arm of the Faculty of Social Science and has conducted over 450 research projects since 1979. In addition, John has also worked as a Consultant for several institutions including the Regional HIV/AIDS Programme (RHAP) based in Pretoria South Africa; National AIDS Commission of Malawi, Government of Malawi, the World Bank, UNICEF and UK Department for International Development (DfID). John’s strengths are in both qualitative and quantitative research studies, monitoring and evaluation and spends 30% of his time teaching undergraduate students at the University of Malawi.
Elizabeth Ekirapa-Kiracho
Dr Elizabeth Ekirapa-Kiracho is a medical doctor who has specialized in the field of health economics. She is a lecturer in the department of Health Policy Planning and Management, where she is responsible for teaching and evaluating both under graduate and postgraduate students, as well as coordinating some courses. She has vast experience in managing, conducting, and analyzing health related research in a variety of fields including health systems, reproductive health, infectious diseases, and health financing and economic evaluation. Her main areas of interest are in health systems research, cost analysis, health financing, and economic evaluation. She is also an effective communicator who has played a key role in disseminating research to stakeholders at different levels. She received an award for the best oral presentation at the 12th Annual Scientific Conference held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Edgar Arnold Lungu
Professionally a State Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Malawi. Obtained a Masters in Health Planning and Policy from University of Leeds in England. Has worked at a district hospital in Malawi, particularly in the paediatric section. After obtaining a Masters moved to the Department of Planning and Policy at central level Ministry of Health as a Health Planning Officer in the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Secretariat ( a section of the Department of Planning and Policy Development)
